I want to make sure people feel this post reflects the culture of the guild as a whole. If we are recruiting for mythic it is important that we are all on the same page about who we want to bring into our guild. I would be posting this on our boards, arthas realm forums, guild recruitment boards, reddit, openraid, mmo-c, icy-veins, and a few other wow communities. Suggestions and feedback are welcome. - Las

UPDATED-- included a bit about not using voice based on your feedback: "Our raid members are expected to play with a high degree of initiative and independence as we do not use voice communication. "

[US-Arthas] [Horde] Teh Slax is recruiting for our 2-night Mythic Progression

About Us

Teh Slax is an old school raiding guild that has its roots in farming Molten Core before Blackwing Lair was even tested. Our core team has been playing together for over nine years, and we are now mostly in our late 20s and early 30s with careers, families, and other hobbies outside the World of Warcraft. We are looking for like-minded individuals who share our ambition to raid at a high level on a light-weight schedule.

Schedule:

Our main raids run Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays at 7:45 PM: the first pull starting at 8 PM and the last pull at 11 PM. We maintain a regular schedule of two nights of required Mythic progression, with one night of (optional) farm raids once Blackrock Foundry unlocks. Our members also host an informal weekend normal/ heroic Highmaul raid open to casual members, friends, pugs, and alts.

Why Slax?

We are dedicated to making the most of our short raid hours, and enjoy the unique culture our guild has established over our 9 years together. All of our members have experienced the burnout that comes with hardcore raiding firsthand, as well as the thrill of playing at a high level. We believe a focused raiding environment with a manageable schedule is the best way to balance our enjoyment of the game with our real lives. It is a great feeling to clear the hardest content in the game early in the week and still have the weekend afterwards to just “slax” -- whether that’s out of game with friends and family or in-game on our offnight runs.

We are currently getting started on Mythic progression, and we’re looking for players at a similar point in their progression. Beyond that, here’s a few things we’re looking for in our new members:

  • Experienced with current raids on Heroic difficulty. Previous Mythic experience is a bonus, but not a strict requirement. If you have logs from current content, we’d love to see them.
  • Available twice per week for our Mythic raid nights on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
  • Up-to-date on theory and practice for your role, your class, and the raid encounters at hand. Our raid members are expected to play with a high degree of initiative and independence as we do not use voice communication.
  • We are relaxed when it comes to raid times, but not when it comes to raid performance. This means being able to give and take constructive feedback on your raid performance: both positive and negative. We expect our members to have a “progression attitude” by staying positive and invested even if the raid is having trouble with an encounter, even if that means wiping for an entire evening.

What classes we need:

- 2+ Hunters (all specializations)
- 1-2 Paladins (Holy and Retribution, with special consideration for Protection offspecs)
- 1-2 Monks (Mistweaver and Windwalker, with special consideration for Brewmaster offspecs)
- 1+ Warlock (all specializations)
- 1+ Warrior (Arms or Fury, with special consideration for Protection offspecs)

We are interested in anyone who is interested in us, so don’t hesitate to get in touch even if your class isn’t listed above.

You can reach me through my battletag: intermedial#1568 — tag your request with “Slax recruitment"

Looks good, maybe add something about no vent? I don't know how much of a difference that makes to people.

Mentioning no vent seems like an important detail to include. But this seems like a really good summary/recruitment pitch.

Updated with a new line about not using voice: "Up-to-date on theory and practice for your role, your class, and the raid encounters at hand. Our raid members are expected to play with a high degree of initiative and independence as we do not use voice communication."

Puff, I'll make a new post on the wow forums -- perhaps it's best to link the old post to this new once though just in case.

Great Job Las!

I can't check from here if you linked the old thread, but I wouldn't worry about it if not.  That thread will disappear into the land of unbumped threads.

Also, how do people feel about *very selectively* inviting pugs for our flex raids as a recruitment strategy? Mainly asking how people would feel if we pugged two hunters, and maybe a warlock or warrior.

The older recruitment strategy back during BC or when we were a top tier guild was to force people to actually apply on the website in a recruiting section.

The advantages of this were many:

1.  You could see if they were able to register on a website.  Honestly, people would fail a lot, and ask how etc.  Well you failed the first test Mr. Derpy and we dont want you.

2.  Freeform application status.  You could see how they presented themselves, how they sounded etc.  Some people would put a nice app together and others would just be pure shit.  Now, we aren't recruiting english majors, but since we don't have voice chat some english understanding was important.

3.  It let the guildies (sometimes Fury or others would take it too far) comment on their build/spec etc.  Someone might ask "why crit gems, haste is better for your spec".  Sometimes the applicant would say, "okay great advice and change", or maybe they would defend their choices, or maybe they would get pissy and not be able to take it.  Helped us find out if they could take some criticism.

4.  It required some effort.  Once people applied they actually cared if they got in or not, and maybe tried more.  I know I could care more if I just casually chatted and got invited to a guild versus actually having to apply and defend myself.

Having said all that:

We aren't that hardcore guild anymore.  Well, I haven't been around, if you WANT to be that hardcore guild then you definitely need a strict application policy.  But, Teh Slax isn't about that.  It's about progressing and having fun, but its DEFINITELY not about carrying people either.  For where we stand now, a more casual recruiting is fine, as long as you cut them if they aren't up to snuff, or have a bad attitude.

So in summary I think it's fine to have a couple pugs invited as long as they as 'interviewed' by someone before hand.  I mean basic stuff like "can you make our raid times, what mods do you use, are you bad?".  And as long as the officers set a decent standard for the new recruits.

Totally agreed Puff. I would not recruit any of the pugs unless we interviewed them and played with them a few times.

If you put up a "LFM foundry normal 665 group" in group finder with 10 or more people in it you instantly get 6-7 dps looking for a spot. Most of them are utter shit, so you kick them -- but once in a while you get someone that's a beast. What I'm proposing is that we regularly do this with our raids, pick up a few extras. If they are good after the raid approach them about joining us again. If they come back a few times -- we recruit them. We actually did this with Mtrx and Amal -- they "F&F" pugged with us for 2-3 weeks cross-server and turned out to be great players.

The reason is the recruitment posts really aren't working at getting new people, so I'm trying to find alternatives. If you are a guild, 7/7 H and 1/7m or 2/7m like we are you are lucky to get a single reply to a recruitment thread, because there is literally nothing to distinguish you from the thousands of other guilds at the same point. Everything starts to look like this: http://blizzardwatch.com/2015/02/06/if-raiding-guilds-were-actually-honest/

Meanwhile, if you are say, a ilvl 665 to 675 mage like me and you post in the guild recruitment threads "omg I'm looking for a guild, I have no logs and no experience but I promise I'm good" you get between 10 - 25 replies within a day looking to recruit you, especially if you're willing to faction or server change. Examples from the last 24 hours:

http://us.battle.net/wow/en/forum/topic/16283528506
http://us.battle.net/wow/en/forum/topic/16201181037

Also, as a player there's little reason to put up with an arduous application process outside of the bleeding edge progression. If we were 6/7 or 7/7 Mythic, we could absolutely demand a more rigorous application process. But at this point I'd rather recruit a bunch of conscripts, see how they work out. If they suck, kick'em. If they're good, keep them.
